Yummy things on toast

When I left Essex for my last term at uni after Easter, I found out that an extremely instagrammable cafe (marble & rose gold? hellooo!) had opened up near by. As soon as I saw them pop up on Facebook, I tagged my fellow bruncher Kelly and insisted we must go!!

Toppers & Toast
(photo taken after baby hand grabber Austin splattered sour cream everywhere)

Toppers & Toast is an Aussie serving breakfast/lunch bar and can be found in Leigh-on-Sea. The magical concept is that you choose the type of bread you want to be toasted and then you choose your topping... ta da!

It probably took us at least half an hour to fully settle on a meal... we chopped and changed so much! I opted for a 'Homestyle' on organic rye, the topping included poached eggs, smashed avacado and crispy bacon streaks. Kelly went for a 'Down Under' on sourdough, and had a yummy mixture of corn fritters, crispy bacon, sour cream and T&T tomato chilli chutney. We also devoured a 'Mango Dream' and 'Coconut Crush' (serious pina colada vibes) smoothie. Mmmmmm.
Toppers & Toast
For once we both left feeling healthy and cleansed after our brunch - we usually go for cake, cake and more cake! Oh and little Austin didn't go without, he was happy munching on our tomatoes and his crisps :) In my mid-year resolution to like avocado, I'll be back before you know it!

Head on over to Toppers & Toasts fb page HERE and go visit asap!

Spring fashion with intu Derby

I was lucky enough to take part in intu Derby's Fashion SOS campaign acting as a Style Reporter. From a competition, 10 Derbyshire people had been selected to win a photoshoot experience and have their fashion crisis solved. To celebrate this, intu Derby are holding a Spring fashion event in which you can get a hold of the latest trends and find some fab discounts from your favourite stores! Download the exclusive discount booklet here.

intu Derby Fashion

The activation event was held last weekend, Olivia and I got to feel very suave wearing our press passes! We started by meeting the stylist, Kimmy Rolfe - Something I was personally excited about due to my textiles/fashion background. Kimmy had put together 7 of this Spring Summers key trends;
- Get them frills
- Mix up your sleeves
- Rock a slogan tee
- Think in pink (personal fave)
- Show your stripes (another fave)
- Go chic and sheer
- Give good shoulder

'The arrival of floral patterns in spring shouldn't come as a surprise but this time around we're noticing a distinct shift in style. Keep an eye out for 70s-style large prints and intricate micro floral designs.'

intu Derby Fashion

'Up your shoulder game this spring with blazers complete with padded shoulders (hello, eighties!) and chic, cocoon-style tops.'

'Stripes are where it's at for spring. Nail the trend with a blue and white striped longline shirt teamed with white jeans and mules.'

Once we were up to date with our trends we were shown the catwalk of all the models who had won the competition. It was so great for me to see the end result of our hard (but fun!) days work.

intu Derby Fashion

I have two more posts coming up surrounding this event, keep your eyes peeled.

Big thank you to intu Derby who let me take part in this campaign! Make sure you download your vouchers and get involved.

Madeleine Alice Textiles

Recently I've been modelling. My very talented friend, Maddy has been keeping herself busy by knitting up a storm!! Maddy is one of my fellow classmates, and an amazing knitter. Top fact: she was actually the very first classmate I met. She asked if I would pose away whilst wearing her garment, and of course I said yes. LOOK AT IT.

This piece has been created based on origami folds. It is extremely well made and I'm pretty proud of her for this - I know how much hard work has gone into it!

Stripes, dungarees and doors

Dungarees

When visiting Rachel in York, I knew that it would be the perfect time for Insta opportunities. I really wasn't wrong, we took HUNDREDS of photo's which are slowly being filtered onto our feeds. What's perfect about being with a like minded blogger/insta pal is that we both know what each other wants in a photo. Lighting, positions, angles, check. And neither of us were bored of posing for days, fab.

I thought I'd share my fave dungaree combo on here seeing as it's taken over the last 9 photo's of my Insta grid. When wearing this outfit, I either feel like a big kid or a pregnant Bridget Jones, there's no in-between.

Dungarees

This outfit features:
Stripey crop top | H&M
Dungarees | H&M
Backpack | Dorothy Perkins
Glitter (!!) plimsols | Primark
Frilly socks | Primark

And I couldn't link any of the above as I'm that behind on fashion, the shops don't stock them anymore :) :)

p.s. what a nice door? Rachel found it and told me we needed a shoot in front of it and now I'm so glad!

Seven days in seven ways

The last week has been a bit of a hectic one, something I'm used to by now. As the Easter break is drawing closer, I have to ignore the fact that I am only scheduled in for 1 1/2 days and come into uni practically every day.

MONDAY
I started off on a positive start. I had booked a meeting with a careers advisor at the main uni site; Kedleston Road. The meeting was to discuss how I should utilise my social media to find work. I like to think I'm pretty social media savvy but I did learn a fair bit. Within 45 minutes of the meeting finishing, I had logged onto Facebook and made contact with a company. The company got back to me within 5 minutes and asked to be sent a CV and 6 samples. Not a bad outcome. I also had a text from the programme leader asking if I wanted to become a student rep - obvs said yes!

I then managed to lose my uni card. The card needed to access buildings, library books, printer, discounts etc. IDIOT.

The day ended with the weekly trip to Aldi with Beth and a bit of late night sketchbooking.

TUESDAY
Tuesday is the scheduled second year day. The print room is where I'm based from 9:30am till 4:30pm. I honestly dread this day as I get super nervous at showing my work, but I was very pleased to receive some strong, positive feedback.
I've managed to get myself the role of 'Class Photographer'. As the textiles studios are split across 2 sites, the print studio does not always get attention in terms of the Textiles social media. Therefore it has become my role to snap away in class and send across pictures to our lovely technician to post. Pst... follow @textilesatderbyuni on Instagram!

Sublimation Printing

I received an e-mail to say my student card had been found... YAY. On my walk to the main site I managed to find some blossom! Fran will know what a big deal this was for me.

Last but not least: an EXCITING phone call.

WEDNESDAY
I woke up feeling unwell and couldn't make it into the drawing session at uni. By lunch time, I found myself feeling better, and went into uni to work on the samples, requested by the company I had contacted. I have a new found love of the Sublimation Printer. What a beauty that machine is.

Sublimation Printing

In the afternoon I had my first ever student rep meeting. I found it really interesting to be a part of the behind the scenes action. It was great to be able to contribute and help suggest ideas in how to make our learning space the best!

In the evening I found myself frantically hunting down placements and putting my design work together.

THURSDAY
On Thursday I attempted to organise my work. I say attempted as I really did not put much effort in. Before long I had hopped on the bus to work. I work in the Digital Marketing team at uni, mainly focussing on the uni's blog, although I do other social media-ey things too! I managed to whip up a new post as well as update myself with what's going on in the office.

I had sent off my work to the company and had heard back, they seemed pleased but had a few more questions for me.

FRIDAY

The morning started with a visit to the dentist. Sounds like a chore but I was so happy to be getting the last of my treatment done. I popped into uni and had a bit of lunch with Beth. Afterwards I treated her to a little blog redesign in return for being my 'Instagram boyfriend' (she reluctantly takes pics for me all the time!).
I went to the print studios for a while to do a spot of dyeing. I'm hoping I've got all my materials dyed now so that I can get on with printing next week! I was very pleased to have received an email to say I have a summer internship with Fred & Noah. I'm definitely looking forward to see what I'll be getting up to!

SATURDAY
The day I've been looking forward to all week!! After 2 1/2 years of following each others blogs, today was the day that I was meeting Rachel. We decided around a year ago that we must meet up as a little blogging crew, but dates didn't work out etc etc. But when Rachel invited me to her 21st birthday in York, I made sure I was there! I will probably do a whole post on this day, or maybe several seeing as we took SO many pictures. I had the loveliest of times exploring York. We visited amazing little cafes, wondered around little streets and went on the biggest Instagram mission of all time!! It's so great to be with someone who understands the need for this! If you want to see what we got up to, follow our Instagrams for the next month.

SUNDAY
Sunday was the day that I was going home! Only a short visit, but the best little adventure EVER. Before heading back, I still had a bit of time. So Rachel, Joey, Rob and I met India for a coffee (smoothie) in town. Again, we had a little explore. York is so beautiful. It was my first time up North and with the help of my new friend Gary, I'm even considering moving away from the South after uni! Getting the train back was the most stressful experience of my life. I got on the train to Scotland... not cool. Luckily the train was stopped and we all ran across to the correct platform so I could jump on my train just pulling in. PHEW.

A little thank you to Rachel and all her lovely friends for having me for the weekend, I'll visit again soon!!

DIY | Ultimate Chocolate Bar

Ultimate Chocolate Bar

It seems that I only ever post ridiculously chocolately DIYs now. I originally made this one for Valentine's Day (cute) and I knew as soon as I made it that I needed to post about it. I thought it would be perfect timing to post seeing as Mother's Day is creeping up. There is no possibility that making this can go wrong, so it is a quick, easy and simple gift to knock up in less than an hour!

Ultimate Chocolate Bar

YOU WILL NEED
  • 2 chocolate bars (200g) of your choice
  • Your fave snacks
  • Greaseproof paper
  • Baking tray
+ A microwave and fridge/freezer

First step is to break your chocolate bars into small chunks and melt them in the microwave (the smaller you break - the quicker it takes to melt). Whilst waiting, place some greaseproof paper onto a baking tray. There's no need to grease it, you just want to have a surface the chocolate won't stick to.

Ultimate Chocolate Bar

Drizzle your chocolate onto your baking tray, trying not to eat it! Spread into the sides by tilting the tray but don't make it too thin.

Ultimate Chocolate Bar

Now you literally just throw your favourite chocolates and sweets onto the melted chocolate. You may find that you'll need to cut up some bits, I cut all of my pieces in half.  Put your tray in the fridge (or freezer if you're impatient), lick the bowl clean and wait. It does seem like an eternity, but you want to make sure the slab is completely solid through once you take it out.

Ultimate Chocolate Bar

When mine was partially solid, I melted some of the white chocolate buttons and popped them in a plastic bag with the end snipped - creating my own piping bag. I then did some artistic, sketchy drizzling over the top and popped it back in the fridge.

Ultimate Chocolate Bar

Once completely ready you can peel the paper off your amazing chocolate slab and cut it up into chunks or leave as it is - ready to enjoy!!

Hope you like this one :) I was actually really surprised to not find this already on pinterest or instagram... but if you make one let me know and tag me!

p.s. sorry if I've ruined lent!

DIY | Cake Shake

After being introduced to the phenomenon that are Cake Shakes last year, I thought that it would be a pretty fun idea to create my own. Whilst 'Alphabet Dating' with my boyfriend it was my turn to choose for the letter C, so this is what I came up with. I guess I cheated by not actually including a cake on mine, whereas Adam of course showed off and made a brownie...

Cake Shake

The beauty of it is, is that you can include practically anything to make your cake shake. The key ingredients are milk and ice cream, the rest is literally a load of unhealthy crap sweet treats. We roughly used 100ml of milk and whatever amount of ice cream to reach the consistency we liked.

Cake Shake

Cake Shake

We both threw in some chopped strawberries (the healthy part), however I also added some Party Rings and Micro Eggs for some extra 'texture'. Next up is to blend away!

Cake Shake

Cake Shake

With the colour bleeding from the eggs, my cake shake gave off a unicorn aesthetic!

To make my Party Rings stick to the rim, I smeared Nutella onto the glass. To finish up I filled my glass with whipped cream, and cut up some strawberry laces to sprinkle on top. I pierced a hole through the strawberry with a straw and voila...

Cake Shake

Despite being pretty confident we could demolish these, we still both struggled! All in all though, it was a pretty fun activity to do... especially for a creative person like me. I love that there can be so many variations.

What's your favourite type of Cake Shake?

Trying the fashion thing

Regardless of the fact that I study Textile Design at uni, I've never actually showed a huge interest in fashion - particularly runway fashion. Growing up I preferred a Nintendo Magazine to Vogue, says it all really. However I do occasionally attempt to make an effort, those outfits that just click in your head?! I have a few of those. If I really had to put a finger on it, quirky items (i.e something only the daring would wear) are my favourite! This time around I have been loving glitter tights #discolegs

A Catch Up at Nando's

I always feel dead guilty for being invited to such amazing events when I make such a poor effort in keeping up my online presence. So when I was invited to Derby's GRAND re-opening of Nando's, I asked my uni pal Beth to come along! Beth and I met when starting our degree at university and she's actually managed to put up with me still to this day. So for being a top friend, I treated her to her first blog event as well as a (free) Nando's of course ;)

Derby's Nando's
Derby's Nando's

The grand re-opening celebrated the stunning new interior of the peri-peri chicken restaurant, focussing on modern South African designAs a designer myself, I was very pleased to hear that Nando's have supported small, independent designers from the Czech, France, Britain and South Africa.

Derby's Nando's

Serious lampshade envy! Every single lampshade has been hand blown or hand woven by some of the amazing designers. The floor has really been brought to life by the vibrant and exotic bursts of colour, making it an enjoyable place to sit down and enjoy your favourite peri-peri chicken!

Derby's Nando's

So a big shout out to Nando's for letting Beth and I enjoy your new surroundings and the gorgeous food! Thanks for having us :)

Do you love yourself a cheeky Nando's?
